At Pinehurst, everything begins beneath the surface. Before each round, we test and amend our soils in-house, guided by nutrient target ranges we’ve personally developed through years of hands-on work. By starting with balance and intention, we give our plants the strongest possible foundation to thrive.

The Living Soil Web

Our gardens are powered by biology.

• Microbes & Ferments — We craft natural ferments in-house and maintain a carefully developed consortium of beneficial bacteria and fungi that unlock minerals, build fertility, and strengthen plant resilience.

• Beneficial Insects — Species such as springtails, isopods, rove beetles, and predatory mites help aerate the soil, break down organic matter, recycle nutrients, and naturally regulate pest populations.

Together, these allies form a living soil web that keeps our ecosystem balanced, fertile, and full of life.

The Rhizophagic Cycle

We also lean on one of nature’s most fascinating processes: the rhizophagic cycle. In this exchange, plant roots draw in microbes, absorb nutrients from them, and then release them back into the soil to begin again. By fostering microbial partnerships, we encourage plants to access minerals in their most natural form; allowing each cultivar to express its genetics with authenticity and depth.

Microbial Protection

Rather than pesticides or synthetics, we rely on biology to protect our plants. Lactobacillus and other beneficial organisms colonize leaf surfaces, outcompeting harmful microbes and building natural resilience without disrupting the ecosystem.

That means avoiding strategies designed to push yields beyond what the plant would naturally give, such as spectrum manipulation or aggressive crop steering. We believe the most memorable flowers are those grown without persuasion; guided by soil, biology, and time.
